The aspect ratio of an image defines the proportion between its width and height. It is always expressed as two numbers separated by a colon (x:y). For example, images with the aspect ratio of 16:9, no matter how big or small, will always have the width of 16 and the height of 9 units of the same length.
There is no setting that I know of to change the aspect ratio of the Classic theme slideshow display, other than to edit-crop the photo with a custom aspect ratio setting using the edit feature of the Photos app. That will get rid of the black bars, but requires a bit of a zoom-in with loss of some of the display area of the photo. It would look like this in the slideshow, cropped at 18:10:
- In the iMovie app on your Mac, select a clip or photo in the browser or timeline whose aspect ratio you want to restore. To show the cropping controls, click the Cropping button. Click the Fit button. The clip’s original aspect ratio.
- In the Photos app on your Mac, select the photos you want in your slideshow. You can add or remove photos later (see “Add or remove photos and text in a slideshow,” below). Choose File Create Slideshow Photos. Click the Slideshow pop-up menu and choose New Slideshow. Type a slideshow name in the Slideshow Name field, then click OK.
